About the procedure
Blepharoplasty addresses eyelid changes that can make the eyes look tired: excess skin on the upper eyelid, which in some cases can interfere with the field of vision, and bags or puffiness on the lower eyelid.
On the upper eyelid, the incision is placed in the natural eyelid crease. On the lower eyelid, depending on the case, it can be made on the inside of the eyelid or just below the lashes. Skin, muscle, and fat are removed or repositioned according to each patient's needs. Blepharoplasty does not, on its own, correct a drooping brow or fine lines around the eyes; if present, these are discussed at the consultation.
Who it is considered for
- Excess skin on the upper eyelids or bags on the lower eyelids.
- Good general and eye health.
- No significant dry eye or uncontrolled eye conditions; in some cases an ophthalmology evaluation may be requested.
- Realistic expectations about the change in appearance; the final recommendation is confirmed at the in-person evaluation.
Recovery
Swelling, bruising, and a feeling of tightness around the eyes are common during the first days. Cold compresses, keeping the head elevated while resting, and eye drops or ointments are usually prescribed, as Dr. Díaz advises.
For the period you are given, it is best to avoid physical exertion, contact lenses, and direct sun exposure. The incisions are checked at follow-up visits. Most swelling subsides within a few weeks, though the result continues to settle over several months, depending on each case.
How the consultation works
At your first in-person consultation, Dr. Díaz reviews your medical history, including any eye conditions, assesses the skin, bags, and the position of the brows and eyelids, and talks with you about what you would like to improve. With that information, he defines which eyelids to treat and builds a personalized plan. First-time consultations are held Mondays and Thursdays, 11:00am–2:00pm, first-come, first-served. Are the scars noticeable?
On the upper eyelid, the scar sits in the natural crease and is usually discreet once mature. On the lower eyelid, depending on the technique, it may be on the inside of the eyelid or just below the lashes. Its final appearance varies by patient.
What type of anesthesia is used?
Depending on whether the upper, lower, or both eyelids are treated, it may be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or under general anesthesia. This is defined at the in-person evaluation.
When can I wear makeup or contact lenses?
They are usually resumed once the incisions have healed, as Dr. Díaz advises at your follow-up visits.
Can it be combined with other procedures?
In some cases it is combined with other facial procedures, such as double-chin liposuction or rhinoplasty. Whether to do them in the same surgery is assessed at the consultation.
